Reflective Essay

In the Summer Bridge program at Johnson and Wales I learned so much about how and what college will be like and I also jumped ahead of the game by getting 2 classes out of the way so I will not have to take them during the actual school year. My experience during this term was a memorable experience. It was a great pleasure meeting some cool people and wonderful professors in this term. I will try to utilize all the material and tools I was taught by my professors in my future class and so on and so forth. Before I started this term I was never into writing because I am more of a math person. Math comes easy to me that’s why I enjoy it so much. Writing does not excite my interest too much because I feel it is boring and I become sleepy overtime while doing it. As the semester progressed I felt myself become a better writer and I felt that my vocabulary took a big leap in utilizing professional terminology for certain papers.

My view for writing never changed, I still feel that writing is not exciting to my interest especially with all the very long articles, stories, and essays that I had to read over the course of this 5 week period. Even though there was a couple of interesting writings that I had encountered, reading is not something that amazes me. Some of my writing that I did was influenced by some student work that I had read upon during class. Learning how to describe certain things so vividly to the point where the audience that I am reaching out to is put into my shoes was a key aspect to how I would write most of my writings. In this class one of my best writings would have to either be when the group of students and I went out into uptown charlotte to analyze and describe what we seen as we was sitting down or the remembered even I chose to do. The reason why I chose those 2 was because in both writings I felt that I put a lot of time and description into trying to get the reader to visualize my point of view in both situations. Especially when we was in uptown charlotte I feel as if any reader could read my writing and see and feel exactly where I was at when I was observing everything. Also the remembered event essay that I wrote I felt that I elaborated on so much that happened in about 20 minutes to make a 7 page paper.

During this time period I also wrote some weak papers that I know where not really my best. I feel that my weakest writing that I wrote was most likely my research paper. It was not that it was awful or anything I just feel that when I am able to describe objects or settings that is when I do my best work. Not when I have to look up information on a topic then give basically a report about what I just discovered. I also felt that since I had to change my topic a couple of times that I was at a disadvantage at writing one of my best papers to the best of my ability. Changing my topic really had set me back a little bit because I had to get rid of information that I already had found due to the fact that it would not have worked not having multiple sources to choose from. As I recently described in earlier sentences I feel that my strength in writing is being very descriptive. I tried my absolute best to give great detail to all the things that I had to write upon in my writings that needed great description.

From this term I can trace my development as a writer. I know that I have become a better writer through all the free writings and learning the reason why we do certain things in writing it has definitely developed me to form a better understanding about writing. My professor and my writing tutor were very helpful in answering the many questions I had about my writings. They also gave me great advise and critiqued my writing to help me become the better writer I am at the end of this term. Writing the many different blog posts and reader responses helped me developed the most because it was practically practice. So once I got the hang of writing for long periods of time in class when It came to writing the essays it was not as hard as it would be. Writing some essays was very difficult having to reach certain words or certain pages but in the end it was very helpful. Something that I learned about myself as I was writing so much this term is that when I choose to take the time out and try my best to put my all into it I write a lot of interesting and good quality things. I felt this come out of me during my first big writing assignment. I actually surprised myself in doing so. I have never done it before in high school and in don’t remember ever actually writing a paper longer than 5 paragraphs will 5 sentences in each paragraph. All of this corresponds with what I knew before this term began by me looking over one of my writings from when I was a junior and looking how non descriptive I was. Utilizing the same terminology exceedingly in the paper and basically showing how low my vocabulary usage was at that level. At the beginning of this term I would define the term “audience” as people who are listening to a certain thing; I would describe the term “purpose” as a reason why people do something, and “voice” as what you utilize to sing. Now after doing this summer term I would define the term “audience” as the people I am, trying to reach in my writing, I would define the term “purpose” as the reason why I am writing, and I would define the term “voice” as the tone and how I am speaking to the audience. I experienced the change of definition in the terms in class form my professor as he explained it more in some of our writing assignments. It made mire since when he explained it to me so I changed it and utilize it that way. This class was very useful and helpful but did not change my view about anything.  This still was a very memorable experience from everything that was taught in the classroom form the jokes to the education it was very special.
